How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor
In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is situated on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The grey wire is located at the edges of the transmission, above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to control the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.
The sensor serves as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu has to know when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the position of the camshaft, so that it can activate the spark and injectors.
If this sensor fails the ECU will display the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and possibly indicating the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. The code will not appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).
It is a little tricky to test because there are various pins on the connector, and each has its own functions. The most effective method to test it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read approximately 1000 ohms when the sensor is at full operation. If you're having issues with this sensor, look for signs of oil or coolant in the connector bay.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, I experienced an abrupt drop in power like the engine is out of gas or injectors aren't firing anymore. genuine audi key replacement uk pulled out the spark plugs this morning, three were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was dry. When I crank the engine without sparks, i place a tissue on top of each injector hole, the 3 drenched with gazoline pop out, but the 4th stay shut. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got 0ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it runs fine with the G28 plugged in. However the intermittent misfire issue persists at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temp value -49c even when i unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars while the actual pressure is 0.
I'm not sure what to do, i think i've pretty much eliminated everything else. However, i'm afraid that I may have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please chime in! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal by the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is identical to the G4 and both function in the 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a salvage yard or at a parts store. It is simple to test them: simply switch your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump on the connector's edge facing upwards). They must be infinite Ohms.
4. ECU
Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, and ADU) engines have an ECU that needs to know the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make decisions about timing of the fuel injectors, etc. In order to do this it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these goes badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner that could cause engine shut down.
A damaged G28 sensor could cause an inaccurate gearbox speed counter and a gearbox which shifts faster than normal, and/or a misfire while in the gear. If you experience any of these problems, it is likely your sensor is failing and needs replacing. They are cheap and easy-to-find particularly when they're an Bosch sensor like ours. Alternatively, the GM version of this part is also a good choice.
5. Tachometer
A failing engine sensor could cause a myriad of issues within your vehicle. It's a crucial component of the transmission in your Audi since it sends information to the ECU about how fast or slow the engine is turning. When this sensor fails, it can affect the performance of the transmission as well as the other car's components.
The G5 engine speed sensor is situated on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear and sends a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49 through an uncolored wire. The ECU is then able to process this signal to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost as well as transmitting it to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can test the sensor for any failure by checking the continuity between it and the tachometer, between the ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection on pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) as well as between T6a/1, and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should see around 1000 ohms of resistance between those two pins. This is a standard part that is found across the Audi 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC to the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU, so the best ones could be available in wrecking yards.
